Anna Karina was a model, a muse, an actor, a director, a novelist, and, most of all, she was a collaborator. The eight movies she made with husband Jean-Luc Godard are among the greatest in the annals of cinema, and though her death in 2019, at the age of 79, brought her work back to the forefront, one commonly left out was their first: Le petit soldat. Thankfully, the Criterion Collection has restored the film and the new Blu-ray transfer looks glorious (as does the version streaming on The Criterion Channel). More on Karina, Godard, and Le petit soldat here.
And now for something completely different: The Medicine, a new documentary about the limitless powers of ayahuasca. For some, it’s a way to unlock the mind and spirit. For others, it’s a 100-meter dash through two decades of emotional development. Fun!
