This week in Film — Oscar-nominated short films and THE RHYTHM SECTION

Oscar nominations always seem to bring moviegoers out of their homes, but nothing quite like the three short packages. Animation, Documentary, and Live Action, five for each (a few extra in Animation) it’s arguably the most bang for your moviegoing buck all year long. A few thoughts on this year’s slate here.

Also in wide release, The Rhythm Section — the latest from cinematographer cum director Reed Morano. Few January releases received much praise (especially those dumped during the Sundance Film Festival), and Rhythm Section isn’t much different. It does have a few highlights, but only a few.
