Cinema is an expensive art. Cinema costs time, energy and, most notably, money. This is even truer for the independent filmmaker, who lacks studio backing and must search outside the system for contributions. Most of the time, that money is needed to create, sometimes it is needed simply to live. This is what likely forms the background of writer/director Andrew Bujalski’s latest effort, Results. The story is not about filmmakers, but working professionals: a gym owner, Trevor (Guy Pearce), his top trainer, Kat (Cobie Smulders) and her wealthy client, Danny (Kevin Corrigan). Danny has recently inherited millions of dollars — … Continue reading RESULTS

THEY CAME TOGETHER

Joel is your typical thirty-something guy: good-looking, well-paying corporate job, nice apartment, vaguely Jewish… but lacking in the inspiration and motivation department. He’s the perfect fixer-upper. Molly is a klutzy girl with a heart of gold. She lives in a colorful apartment, runs a non-for-profit candy store and has a black friend. She’s perpetually single, but she isn’t giving up on finding true love. Then one Halloween party, Joel and Molly met, and boy-oh-boy did they hate each other at first, but then they realized they both had an affinity for fiction books and they fell madly in love. Archipelago – Another week, another movie from writer/director Joanna Hogg. This time out Hogg takes us to a remote English location to explore the quiet desperation in the lives of others. An archipelago is a collection of small islands in a vast sea, a perfect descriptor for this family who is waiting for Father to arrive. Smacks of Beckett and Antonioni, but in the best possible way. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Amy Lloyd, Christopher Baker, Kate Fahy and Lydia Leonard. In limited release from Kino Lorber.   Begin Again – Dan (Mark Ruffalo) is an ex-record executive who is drowning his … Continue reading Movie Beat – 06.27.14

Afflicted – Derek Lee and Clif Prowse have a plan. They are going to take a year off, travel around the world and film every last second of it. What will they do with all that footage? Upload it to the Internet of course! They rig themselves with cameras and take off. Everything goes according to the plan for a day or two and then they meet a beautiful and tempting woman. Sounds a little Old Testament-y, but that woman does something to Derek and now he has powers well beyond his control. What happens to Derek and what will … Continue reading Movie Beat – 04.04.14

Bettie Page Reveals All – She was the original pin-up girl. That magnificent cocktail of beauty, innocence, naughty and nice. What was so compelling about a picture of Betty Page was her joyous approach to sexuality. Anyone looking at her picture would immediately let their mind wander to possibilities and what a good time it would be. Of course, the notorious Mrs. Page came along in a very reserved and conservative time, and she disappeared from view, but her image and legacy lived on. Writer/producer/director Mark Mori found Mrs. Page and got her to narrate her life story, and here … Continue reading Movie Beat – 11.22.13
