Told with all the aesthetic excitement of an episode of DatelineMoney Machine is a catch as catch can collection of conspiracy theories surrounding the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This shooting—colloquially referred to as One October—left 58 dead and over 800 injured. As of today, One October stands as the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

The perpetrator: Stephen Paddock, who killed himself with his final bullet. That bullet silenced the reason for Paddock’s rampage, but that certainly doesn’t mean we can’t speculate. And speculate they do.

Directed by Ramsey Denison, Money Machine is loaded with theories about Paddock’s mental state, his gambling history, the shift in Las Vegas business dealings from the mob to corporations, secondary—maybe tertiary—gunmen, and on and on and on. Frankly, it’s exhausting. At least when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their fellow students on April 20, 1999, they left a litany of manifestos as posterity.

There’s nothing so simple to Paddock, and so Money Machine runs rampant with speculation and connections, trying to tie an entire city and multi-billion dollar businesses in with Paddock. Incestuous collusion, corruption, conspiracy, and profiteering like we’ve never seen before. Some of it raises an eyebrow of suspicion, but little passes the sniff test.

Money Machine is available on global VOD.
